Short answer: no. Easy peasy. You can go through Yellowstone and Grand Teton’s entrance gates 24/7 without reservations. During the hours the gates are staffed, which is roughly 7am to 7pm, you can purchase your pass there at those gates. This interaction is quick and easy with a credit/debit card/or with cash there at the gate day of the tour. Surprisingly, purchasing through the online system in advance truly is less efficient than handling buying a pass the day of the tour or your first day going in either park. If they aren’t staffed you can breeze in for free, which often happens when we cruise through on our typically 6am starts. You can purchase a weekly or annual, or lifetime pass (Note for lifetime passes: if you’re disabled, can show you’re tribal ID, or if you’re active military or a veteran with an ID reflecting that status it’s free. An if you’re over 62 lifetime passes are $80).
